Dilophosaurus was a large carnivorous dinosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic period, around 193 million years ago. It was one of the first dinosaurs to evolve into a large predator, with an estimated length of 20 feet and a weight of about 1,000 pounds. This theropod is most famous for the pair of crests on its head, which were likely used for display or communication within its species, although their exact purpose is still debated. Dilophosaurus had a relatively lightweight build, making it an agile predator that hunted smaller dinosaurs and other animals. Unlike some of the more well-known theropods like Tyrannosaurus rex, Dilophosaurus had a more primitive structure with a long, slender body and a powerful bite. Fossils of Dilophosaurus have been found in North America, particularly in what is now the western United States, providing valuable insight into the early days of large carnivorous dinosaurs.
The Dilophosaurus can be easily recognized by the two distinctive bony crests on its head. They are bright red and can be seen from afar. It also has a fiery red crest on its long back, all the way to the tip of its tail. Its beautiful lizard skin is bluish in color. What a looker!
Weighing just over 1,000 pounds, the Dilophosaurus is almost a lightweight compared to the other dinosaurs. But it should not be underestimated. The carnivore is a real predator and can crush fish or smaller dinosaurs like peanuts between its strong fangs. Because it has such strong hind legs, it’s a very good runner and can easily catch up with its prey when hunting. Better not let it catch your scent in the first place.
