Armadillo measures: 3.0 x 0.8 x 1.2 inch

Schleich Product Information:

The Armadillo really is unique with its thick scaly carapace. It covers the whole body, leaving only the pointed nose and eyes exposed. The long nose gives it away: the Armadillo has a keen sense of smell to sniff out insects even when they are buried deep in the ground. It doesn't mind the heat. After all, it is at home in South America and used to hot days.

The Armadillo is unmistakable and certainly has a very descriptive name. Its thick scaly armor is composed of several belts that run around its entire body. It looks kinda cute. Especially when it runs nimbly across the desert on its short legs. It has probably tracked down a tasty morsel with its sensitive nose. Most of all it loves to eat insects. When it's digging them out of their underground hiding places, the armadillo can hold its breath for up to six minutes! After that, we have to admit, it has really earned its meal.

Armadillo Information:

Armadillos are small to medium-sized mammals known for their armored shells. There are various species of armadillos, but most are found in the Americas, particularly in South and Central America. The nine-banded armadillo is the only species found in the United States.

Key features of armadillos include:

  1. Armor: Armadillos have a tough, bony shell composed of plates that cover the top of their bodies. This armor provides protection against predators.

Their armor is composed of bony plates covered by tough, overlapping scales called scutes. These scutes provide protection to the armadillo's body.

The armadillo's armor is primarily found on its dorsal (upper) side, covering the back, head, and tail. The number and arrangement of scutes vary among different armadillo species. Some armadillos have three bands of scutes, while others may have nine or more.

  2. Habitat: They inhabit a range of environments, from grasslands and forests to deserts. They are adaptable and can live in diverse ecosystems.

  3. Behavior: Armadillos are primarily nocturnal, meaning they are active during the night. They are also skilled diggers and use their strong claws to excavate burrows for shelter and foraging.

  4. Diet: Their diet consists of insects, small invertebrates, and some plant matter. They use their keen sense of smell to locate prey.

  5. Reproduction: Most armadillo species give birth to litters of identical quadruplets. This unique reproductive strategy sets them apart from many other mammals.

  6. Range: The range of armadillos extends from the southern United States through Central and South America.
