Schleich Product Information:

Doesn't it look a picture when the Ibex stands on a rocky outcrop surveying its realm? Its mighty horns can be seen from afar. Simply majestic! The high mountains are its home. When it skips skillfully over the rocks, no one can follow.

Skillfully, the Ibex climbs up and down among the high mountain rocks. Setting its dainty hooves with caution, with an eye on the trail, the Ibex can move effortlessly through the difficult terrain of the Alps. More confidently than any other mammal here. It can easily scramble to heights of 3,500 meters! But when it gets hungry, it usually descends again from those lofty heights, because the juicy alpine meadows with the tasty herbs are usually lower down.

Alpine Ibex Information:

The Alpine Ibex (Capra ibex) is a species of wild goat that is native to the European Alps. Here are some key characteristics and information about the Alpine Ibex:

  1. Physical Appearance:

    • Adult males, known as bucks, are larger than females (does). Bucks can weigh between 65 to 100 kg (143 to 220 lbs), while does are smaller.
    • Both males and females have distinctive curved horns. The horns of males are larger and can grow up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) in length. Females also have horns but they are shorter and straighter.
  2. Habitat:

    • Alpine Ibex are well-adapted to live in mountainous regions. They inhabit rocky slopes, cliffs, and alpine meadows at elevations between 1,800 to 3,300 meters (5,900 to 10,800 feet).
  3. Diet:

    • Their diet mainly consists of grasses, herbs, and shrubs that are available in their mountainous habitat. They are herbivores.
  4. Behavior:

    • Alpine Ibex are known for their agility and climbing abilities. They can navigate steep and rocky terrain with ease, using their hooves for grip.
    • During the mating season (rut), males engage in competition for mating rights, using their horns to establish dominance.
  5. Conservation Status:

    • The Alpine Ibex faced endangerment in the past, but conservation efforts have helped increase their population. They are now listed as a species of "Least Concern" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
  6. Social Structure:

    • Ibexes are social animals and live in groups. The social structure is based on age and gender, with separate groups for males and females. During the rutting season, males may join female groups for mating.
  7. Adaptations:

    • Their hooves have concave undersides that provide excellent grip on steep and rocky surfaces.
    • The thick fur on their bodies helps them withstand harsh alpine climates.
