Safari Ltd. Smilodon Review:
The Safari Ltd. Smilodon is a nice Smilodon figure and is typically one of the lower cost Smilodon toys currently available. This figure is one of the smaller Smilodons, but even still this Smilodon has a lot of nice details. The painted stripes on the back are very realistic. There is good contrast between the light brown, back stripes and the white highlights on the face and belly. The mouth is very realistic. Overall the Safari Ltd. Smilodon is a good figure and gives some of the higher priced Smilodon models a run for their money. This figure would look good in your collection.

Smilodon Facts:
The name Smilodon is derived from "two edged knife" and "tooth". The Smilodon "big" teeth were around 11 inches long. The Smilodon lived approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago and ranged throughout North and South America. Depending on the species, the Smilodon ranged from 120 - 950 lbs. The Smilodon primarily hunted large mammals (like buffalo). Their large teeth were fragile however and could not bite into bone without the risk of breaking.
The Smilodon is also known as the "saber tooth tiger" and is one of the most recognizable and well-known prehistoric animals. Ironically, the "Sabertooth" isn't really related to the tiger, but rather is related to the cat family (Felinae). Thus to call the Smilodon a "Sabertooth Tiger" is to miss-name the Smilodon.
