The first written record of the bluespotted ray was made in 1841 by explorer Heinrich Kuhl, who discovered it in the waters off the coast of Indonesia. It is believed that there are five subspecies of blue spotted stingray, but there is not sufficient data to either confirm or deny this theory. In fact, data on the bluespotted ray is limited to begin with, and biologists aren’t sure what the current condition of their global population is.
