Did you know that alligators have exceptional night vision? Their eyes contain a high number of rod cells, allowing them to see well in low-light conditions.
Safari Ltd. Alligator with Babies measures: 11.3" L x 7" W x 3.9" H
Although alligators are best known for being fearsome predators, they also make good mothers! Adult female alligators not only defend their nests from predators, but they help their hatchlings make it to water and will spend up to a year protecting them.
Scientific Name: Alligator mississippiensis
Characteristics: Designed to capture all the striking details of this reptilian family, our artfully sculpted figurine features young alligators nestled atop their mother's back, just like they would be in the wild. Their bodies display the camouflaged yellow and brown stripe pattern seen on young alligators, while the mother's dark brown shades help her blend into the murky water while hunting.
Size and Color: 12 inches long and 7.5 inches wide, this moss green and mustard yellow alligator family is exactly the length of a standard ruler and its width is a touch shorter than the length of a No. 2 pencil. Whether it's your desk, nightstand, or among your other figurines, this mama is just looking for a good place to raise her young! The Alligator with Babies is part of the Incredible Creatures® collection.

Alligator Information:
Mother alligators exhibit remarkable parental care for their young. When it comes to protecting their offspring, they’re quite devoted. Here’s what happens:
-
Nest Construction and Egg Deposition:
- During late spring and early summer, female alligators build nests on dry ground using vegetation, sticks, and reeds.
- They deposit 30 to 50 eggs in the nest and cover it up.
- While they venture to the water, they stay close to the nest to protect their eggs.
-
Calling For Mom:
- Just before hatching, the young alligators (still inside their eggs) begin vocalizing.
- These vocalizations serve two purposes: synchronize the hatching of siblings and attract the mother to the nest.
- When hatching begins, the mother gently opens the nests using her powerful jaws.
- She then carries the hatchlings to the water. This process can take a while, as she can only carry a few at a time.
-
Protective Pods:
- Once in the water, the young alligators form social groups called “pods.”
- Their large and intimidating mother provides most of their protection.
- When the young are in distress, they emit calls that get her attention, and she comes to their aid.
