Kentrosaurus is a genus of stegosaurid dinosaur that lived approximately 155 to 150 million years ago during the Late Jurassic Period. This medium-sized herbivore, measuring around 4.5 meters (15 feet) in length, is known for its distinctive row of large bony plates along its back and two pairs of long spikes on its tail, which were likely used for defense against predators. Fossils of Kentrosaurus were first discovered in Tanzania, Africa, in 1909 by German paleontologist Edwin Hennig. The name “Kentrosaurus” means “spiked lizard” in Greek, reflecting its prominent tail spikes.
