The Axolotl is an unusual type of salamander that is able to reach adulthood without losing its gills and transitioning to a partially land-based lifestyle like most other amphibians. Instead it remains fully aquatic. In the wild Axolotls are highly endangered, but they are popular in the pet trade, where they are captive bred.

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a unique and fascinating amphibian native to the freshwater lakes and canals of Mexico, particularly Lake Xochimilco. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls exhibit neoteny, meaning they retain their larval features throughout their adult life. This includes their external gills, which resemble feathery branches extending from either side of their head. Axolotls can grow up to 12 inches in length and are typically brownish-gray in the wild, although captive-bred individuals often display a variety of colors, including white with pink gills.
These creatures are carnivorous, feeding on a diet of small fish, worms, and insects. One of the most remarkable traits of the axolotl is its ability to regenerate lost body parts, including limbs, spinal cord, heart, and even parts of its brain. Despite their popularity in the pet trade and research, wild axolotls are critically endangered due to habitat loss and pollution. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect this extraordinary species and its natural habitat.
