Stegouros is a genus of ankylosaurian dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 72 to 75 million years ago, in what is now southern Chile. This dinosaur is notable for its distinctive tail weapon, which resembles an Aztec macuahuitl—a club-like blade made of embedded obsidian. Unlike the traditional tail clubs of ankylosaurs, Stegouros’ weapon was flat and blade-like, making it a unique adaptation. Measuring around 2 meters (6.5 feet) in length, it was relatively small compared to other armored dinosaurs. Fossil evidence suggests that Stegouros relied on its tail for defense against predators, as well as its armor-plated body for protection. Its discovery in 2021 has provided significant insights into the diversity and evolution of ankylosaurids in the Southern Hemisphere.
