Safari Ltd. "Wapiti" Elk Information:
The Wapiti, also known as the American Elk, is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae. Native to North America and parts of Central and East Asia, these majestic animals are known for their impressive size and distinctive antlers. Male Wapiti, or bulls, can weigh up to 1,100 pounds and stand about 5 feet tall at the shoulder, while females, or cows, are slightly smaller. They have a reddish-brown coat in the summer that turns to a lighter, tan color in the winter. Wapiti are highly adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, and mountainous regions. They are herbivores, primarily grazing on grasses, leaves, and bark. During the mating season, bulls are known for their loud, bugling calls, which can be heard over long distances. These calls are used to attract females and establish dominance over other males.
