Glyphoderma is an extinct genus of prehistoric turtle that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. This turtle is primarily known from fossil remains found in Mongolia. It belongs to the family Nanhsiungchelyidae, which includes large, land-dwelling turtles.
The Nanhsiungchelyidae family, to which Glyphoderma belongs, is notable for its distinctive shell morphology, which was heavily ossified, providing significant protection. These turtles had a robust and somewhat flattened shell, indicating they were well-adapted to a terrestrial lifestyle. The shell structure and overall morphology of Glyphoderma suggest it was a land turtle, unlike many of its contemporaries that were more aquatic.
The specific characteristics of Glyphoderma include a heavily armored shell with a unique texture, which is likely the origin of its name ("glypho-" meaning carved or engraved, and "-derma" meaning skin or shell). This type of shell would have provided excellent protection against predators of the time.
High detailed, realistic and exquisite.
