Mamenchisaurus was a genus of sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, approximately 160 to 145 million years ago. The name Mamenchisaurus means "Mamenchi lizard," referring to the location in Sichuan, China, where it was first discovered.
This genus is particularly notable for having the longest neck in proportion to its body of any known dinosaur, with some species possessing necks up to 49 feet long. The extreme neck length of Mamenchisaurus has been a subject of fascination for paleontologists and dinosaur enthusiasts alike. This unique adaptation allowed the dinosaur to reach vegetation that was inaccessible to other herbivores, potentially reducing competition for food resources. The neck contained numerous elongated cervical vertebrae, sometimes numbering up to 19, which is more than most other sauropods.
