Atopodentatus is a genus of marine reptiles that lived approximately 247 to 242 million years ago during the Middle Triassic period. Discovered in China in 2014, this reptile quickly gained attention for its highly unusual skull morphology. The name Atopodentatus translates to "unusual teeth," reflecting its most striking feature: a wide, hammer-shaped snout equipped with densely packed, comb-like teeth. This tooth adaptation is believed to have been used for filter-feeding, enabling Atopodentatus to sift small organisms from sediment or water, much like modern flamingos or baleen whales.
Atopodentatus belonged to a group of marine reptiles known as sauropterygians, which also included plesiosaurs and nothosaurs. However, its unique feeding strategy sets it apart from other members of this group. The hammer-shaped snout was initially misinterpreted as evidence of a downward-curving jaw until further fossil discoveries clarified its true structure. This feature represents a remarkable example of evolutionary innovation in response to ecological pressures.
