Borealopelta, meaning "Northern Shield," is a genus of nodosaurid ankylosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 112 million years ago. This herbivorous dinosaur roamed what is now North America, specifically regions of Alberta, Canada.
Borealopelta is renowned for its incredible state of preservation. Discovered in 2011 at a mining site, its fossil remains included not only the bones but also the skin impressions, armor plates, and even traces of pigmentation. This extraordinary find has allowed scientists to study its external appearance and hypothesize about its lifestyle in unprecedented detail. The preserved pigmentation revealed that Borealopelta likely had a reddish-brown coloration with countershading—a darker back and lighter underside. This color pattern suggests that Borealopelta used camouflage to evade predators, despite its formidable armor.
