As the largest of the three elephant species, African bush elephants can reach up to 24 feet in length, stand about 13 feet tall at the shoulder, and weigh up to 11 tons. Their massive bodies are supported by sturdy, pillar-like legs, and they possess large ears that help regulate body temperature by dissipating heat. The trunk, an elongated fusion of the nose and upper lip, is a versatile tool used for breathing, smelling, touching, grasping, and vocalizing. Both males and females have tusks, which are elongated incisor teeth made of ivory; these tusks are used for digging, foraging, and defense.
