Death's Head Hawkmoth Information:

Moths in general are a diverse group of insects that belong to the order Lepidoptera, which also includes butterflies. Moths are characterized by their typically drab coloration and nocturnal habits, although some species are brightly colored and fly during the day. Most moths have two pairs of wings that are covered in scales, which can come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Moths are important pollinators and serve as a food source for many animals. Some moth species are also considered pests because they can damage clothing, crops, and stored food.

The Death’s-head hawkmoth (genus Acherontia) is a fascinating creature known for its distinctive human skull-shaped markings on the thorax. Here are some key facts:

Appearance:
The African death’s-head hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos) is the largest moth in the British Isles, with a wingspan of 13 cm (5 in). It’s a powerful flier and has even been found on ships far from land.
Its forewings are mottled dark brown and pale brown, while the hind wings are orangey-buff with narrow dark bands.
The abdomen has a broad, dark dorsal stripe, but the most striking feature is a patch of short yellowish hairs on the thorax that resembles a human skull.
When viewed upside-down, the markings create an illusion of a head with eyes, nostrils, and other facial features—an adaptation likely meant to deter or deceive predators.

Life Cycle:
The caterpillar of the African death’s-head hawkmoth is sturdy and variable in color (buff, green, or brown) with seven diagonal blue lines.
It has a curved, thorn-like horn at the rear and can reach a length of 5 to 6 inches (13 to 15 cm).
The pupa is stout and reddish-brown, forming underground in a chamber about the size of a large hen’s egg.

Behavior:
These moths are nocturnal and fly late at night.
They can produce a squeaking sound by inhaling and exhaling air, adding to their mystique.
Next time you encounter one, you’ll appreciate its eerie beauty!
