Meerkats are small mammals that inhabit the deserts and plains of Africa. They are part of the mongoose family, and they are incredibly social creatures, living in groups of up to 30 individuals. Meerkats are known for their distinctive features, such as their dark circles around their eyes and their long, slender bodies. Meerkats are diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day. They use their sharp claws and strong limbs to dig burrows, which they use as shelter from predators and extreme temperatures.
Meerkats have a unique social structure, with each group having an Alpha couple that is in charge of the colony. These Alpha couples are responsible for mating and defending the territory, as well as leading the group on foraging trips. Other members of the group help to look after the young, alert the colony to danger, and take part in cooperative hunting.
Meerkats are very social animals and can often be seen standing on their hind legs, using their long necks and heads to look around for predators. They can also make loud barking sounds to alert each other of danger.
