The Mojo Hippo Calf figure measures approx: 2.5 L x 1.5 H x 0.8 W inches.
A hippopotamus calf is the young offspring of the common hippopotamus, one of the largest and most formidable animals in Africa. Hippos are known for their massive size, with adults reaching up to 3,300 pounds for females and 4,000 pounds for males. The calves, however, are born weighing around 55 to 110 pounds and measure about 3.3 feet in length.
Hippo calves are typically born in water after a gestation period of approximately eight months. The aquatic environment provides a safe and buoyant space for the newborns, reducing the risk of injury and allowing the mother to easily support the calf. Within minutes of birth, a hippo calf can swim and will often stay close to its mother, relying on her for nourishment and protection. The calf nurses underwater, closing its nostrils and ears to prevent water from entering while suckling.
The bond between a mother hippo and her calf is strong, with the mother being highly protective. She will keep the calf close by, especially during the first few months of life when the calf is most vulnerable to predators such as crocodiles, lions, and hyenas. The calf's diet consists mainly of its mother’s milk for the first six to eight months, after which it begins to graze on grass, gradually weaning off milk as it grows.
