Walruses are large marine mammals belonging to the pinniped family, which also includes seals and sea lions. There are two subspecies of walruses: the Atlantic walrus and the Pacific walrus. The Pacific walrus is generally larger than its Atlantic counterpart, with males weighing up to 4,400 pounds and females up to 2,700 pounds. Both subspecies are characterized by their significant size, long tusks, and distinctive whiskers.
Tusks are one of the most recognizable features of walruses. Both males and females possess these elongated canine teeth, which can grow up to three feet in length. Tusks serve multiple functions: they are used to help haul the walrus's massive body out of the water and onto ice, for defense against predators such as polar bears and orcas, and in social interactions and displays of dominance among males. The tusks also play a role in foraging, helping walruses to dig through sediment on the ocean floor in search of food.
