Hedgehogs are small, spiny mammals. They are native to parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, with introduced populations in New Zealand. These animals are easily recognizable by their coat of stiff, sharp spines, or quills, which they use as a defense mechanism against predators. When threatened, a hedgehog will roll into a tight ball, with its spines pointing outward to deter potential attackers.
There are seventeen species of hedgehogs, which vary in size from about 4 to 12 inches in length. They have a distinctive appearance with a pointed snout and round, black eyes. Their diet primarily consists of insects, making them insectivores, but they are also known to eat small vertebrates, fruits, and vegetables. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the night, foraging for food under the cover of darkness.
