Polar bear cubs are born in the harsh Arctic environment, primarily in dens dug by their mothers in snowdrifts. These dens provide essential warmth and protection from the frigid temperatures and predators. Typically, polar bears give birth to one or two cubs at a time, usually between November and January. At birth, the cubs are tiny, weighing about one pound, and are covered in a thin layer of fur. They are completely dependent on their mother for warmth and nutrition during the first few months of their lives.
The early months are spent in the den, where the cubs nurse on their mother’s rich milk, which helps them grow rapidly. By the time they are ready to leave the den in March or April, they have gained significant weight and are more robust, weighing between 22 to 33 pounds. Once outside, the cubs begin to explore their surroundings under the watchful eye of their mother. This period of exploration is crucial for their development, as they learn essential survival skills such as hunting, swimming, and navigating the icy terrain.
