The American bison (Bison bison), often referred to as the buffalo, is the largest land mammal in North America. Once numbering in the millions, bison roamed the Great Plains and forests of North America in vast herds. These majestic animals are known for their massive heads, thick, shaggy fur, and strong, muscular bodies, which allow them to thrive in various environments, from prairies to mountainous regions.
Male bison, called bulls, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand up to 6 feet tall at the shoulder, while females, or cows, are generally smaller. Bison are herbivores, grazing primarily on grasses, and their unique hump, formed by powerful shoulder muscles, helps them plow through deep snow in search of food during the harsh winter months. Despite their size, bison can run up to 35 miles per hour and are known for their agility and endurance.
Historically, bison played a crucial role in the ecosystems of the American plains and were an important resource for Indigenous peoples, providing food, clothing, and materials for shelter. Due to overhunting in the 19th century, the bison population was nearly wiped out, but conservation efforts have since helped their numbers recover, though they remain a symbol of the American wilderness and conservation success. Today, bison are protected in national parks and wildlife reserves, where they continue to play a vital role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems.
