Chasmosaurus is a genus of ceratopsid dinosaur that lived during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 76-73 million years ago. Its name comes from the Greek words meaning “cleft” or “opening” and “lizard.” The distinctive feature of Chasmosaurus is the large openings (fenestrae) in its frill, giving it a unique appearance. These openings are what inspired its name, which means “opening lizard.” The dinosaur measured around 4.3–4.8 meters (14.1–15.7 feet) in length and weighed between 1.5 to 2 tonnes (1.7–2.2 short tons). All known specimens of Chasmosaurus were found in the Dinosaur Park Formation at Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada.
