The American Mastodon (Mammut americanum) was a large, elephant-like mammal that roamed North and Central America during the Pleistocene epoch, going extinct around 10,000 years ago. Though similar in appearance to mammoths, mastodons were distinct, with straighter, shorter tusks and a more heavily muscled build. They primarily inhabited forests and wetlands, feeding on twigs, leaves, and aquatic plants. Unlike mammoths, which were more closely related to modern elephants, mastodons belonged to a separate evolutionary lineage that diverged millions of years earlier. Fossil evidence suggests they were hunted by early humans, contributing to their extinction alongside climate changes at the end of the last Ice Age.
Mammut americanum
In 1801, it became the first fossil vertebrate to be reconstructed and mounted for display in North America. It was one of the most massive and advanced mammutid species. Recently, several specimens from the western USA were classified as belonging to the new species Mammut pacificum.
