The Columbian Mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) was one of the largest species of mammoth, standing up to 4 meters (13 feet) tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 10 tons. It lived throughout North America during the Pleistocene epoch, favoring grasslands and open woodlands. Unlike the woolly mammoth, which thrived in icy tundras, the Columbian mammoth inhabited warmer climates, sporting a less dense coat of hair. These herbivorous giants fed on grasses, shrubs, and trees, using their enormous tusks to strip bark and dig for food. They coexisted with early humans, who hunted them for meat, hides, and bones, possibly contributing to their extinction around 10,000 years ago. Fossils and preserved remains have provided valuable insights into their anatomy and behavior, making them one of the most well-studied prehistoric mammals.
Mammuthus columbi
It was a large mammoth species endemic to North America. Recent ancient DNA analysis has shown that the Columbian mammoth resulted from hybridization between the steppe mammoth and the woolly mammoth, which occurred approximately 0.42 Ma.
