EOFAUNA - Tyrannosaurus - Sue #009
14+ Years
Small Parts. Not for children under 3 years.
Gorgeous contrasting hide! This tyrannosaurus Sue figure is so well made. With a big muscular head and moving jaw!
EoFauna Tyrannosaurus - Sue measures: 12" L x 4.5" T.
Firstly, what caught my eye was the vibrant black and orange hide, which gives this model an eye-catching and vibrant appearance. The spidering lines and faint stripes that decorate the body and legs are masterfully executed, adding a touch of realism that's hard to find in other therapod models. The coloration on this figure is so well done that it immediately draws you in and demands your attention.
The scale detail on this model is impeccable. The sculpting work is a testament to the dedication and passion of the designers. The overall sculpt, especially on the head, is nothing short of exceptional. The Tyrannosaur's fearsome head is a highlight, with all the intricate features beautifully captured. What truly sets this model apart is the fact that the mouth can be opened and closed, revealing detailed teeth.
The base of the model is well made, but not required for Sue to stand.
The Tyrannosaurus rex, often dubbed the “King of the Tyrant Lizards,” has long captured our imaginations. However, a recent study published in Evolutionary Biology suggests that T. rex might actually be three distinct species: T. rex, T. regina (the “tyrant lizard queen”), and T. imperator (the “tyrant lizard emperor”).
Tyrannosaurus imperator:
Proposed as a separate species, T. imperator was initially believed to be around 20% larger than Sue (another famous T. rex specimen). However, it’s now considered a larger-than-usual T. rex.
The specimen attributed to T. imperator is now known as “Peck’s Rex” or “Peckrex”.
Features of T. imperator:
Fossils found in lower and middle sediment layers are associated with T. imperator.
These specimens exhibit robust femurs and typically have two incisor teeth, features that seem to be retained from earlier ancestors (tyrannosaurids).
Debate and Skepticism:
Not all paleontologists agree with this new classification. Some argue that the differences observed are subtle and could be attributed to individual variation.
Thomas Carr, a paleontologist, contends that the features distinguishing species should be “smack-in-the-face-with-a-frying-pan obvious”.
The debate also stems from differing opinions on what constitutes a species in dinosaur taxonomy.
