Honeypot ants, also known as honey ants or repletes, are a unique type of ant found in arid and semi-arid regions around the world. They are known for their ability to store large quantities of liquid food within their bodies, acting as living storage containers for their colonies.
The worker ants of a honeypot ant colony collect food, such as nectar and honeydew from aphids, and bring it back to the nest. However, instead of consuming all the food themselves, they regurgitate it and feed it to certain specialized members of the colony called repletes. These repletes have distensible abdomens that can expand to many times their normal size, resembling small balloons.
The worker ants feed the repletes until their abdomens become swollen and engorged with liquid food. The repletes hang from the ceilings of chambers deep within the ant nest, serving as living food storage for the colony during periods of scarcity or drought when food sources are limited. The stored liquid food can sustain the colony for several months, allowing them to survive in harsh environments. When the colony is in need of food, the worker ants tap the abdomens of the repletes, causing them to regurgitate stored food, which is then shared with the rest of the colony. This distribution of stored food helps maintain the survival of the entire ant colony during times of food scarcity.
Honeypot ants have evolved this remarkable ability to store food within their bodies as an adaptation to survive in arid environments where food resources are unpredictable and sporadic.
