Ceratosuchus is an extinct genus of crocodile-like reptiles that lived during the Late Triassic period, approximately 210 million years ago. It belonged to a group of archosaurs known as phytosaurs, which were semi-aquatic reptiles that superficially resembled crocodiles but were not closely related to them.
Ceratosuchus was a relatively large phytosaur, with an estimated length of about 4-5 meters (13-16 feet). It had a long, slender snout with numerous sharp teeth, which it likely used to catch fish and other small prey in the water. Its body was streamlined, and it had limbs adapted for swimming.
The distinguishing feature of Ceratosuchus is the presence of a pair of bony crests on the top of its skull. These crests extended backward from the eyes and likely served as attachments for powerful jaw muscles, giving the reptile a strong bite force.
Ceratosuchus inhabited freshwater environments such as rivers and lakes, where it likely lived a semi-aquatic lifestyle, hunting for prey in the water and basking on the shores. Fossils of Ceratosuchus have been found in parts of North America, specifically in present-day Arizona and New Mexico.
Overall, Ceratosuchus represents an interesting and diverse group of reptiles that thrived during the Triassic period, but became extinct along with many other reptilian groups at the end of the period, likely due to environmental changes and the emergence of more advanced reptiles.
