Despite their formidable appearance, they are filter feeders, using specialized gill rakers to sieve zooplankton, small fish, and invertebrates from the water as they swim with their mouths agape.
Basking Sharks are typically solitary creatures, although they may form loose aggregations in areas with abundant planktonic food sources. They are migratory animals, traveling long distances in search of food and warmer waters.
Despite their enormous size, Basking Sharks are gentle giants and pose no threat to humans. They play a vital role in marine ecosystems as apex predators and are protected in many countries due to their vulnerable conservation status.
