Nautilus Pompilius, commonly known as the chambered nautilus, is a species of cephalopod that inhabits the deep waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It is one of the few surviving members of the nautiloid family, which has existed for over 500 million years, making it a living fossil.
The chambered nautilus has a distinctive spiral shell divided into multiple chambers, with the animal living in the largest, outermost chamber. As the nautilus grows, it creates new chambers, sealing off the old ones with a calcareous septum. This unique shell structure provides buoyancy control, allowing the nautilus to adjust its position in the water column by filling or emptying its chambers with gas and water.
Nautilus Pompilius is a nocturnal predator, feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and carrion using its tentacles and powerful beak-like jaws. It has poor eyesight but relies on a keen sense of smell to locate prey in the dark depths of the ocean.
