Horseshoe crabs are ancient marine arthropods that have remained virtually unchanged for millions of years, with origins dating back to the Ordovician period, over 450 million years ago. Despite their name, horseshoe crabs are not true crabs and belong to a separate taxonomic group called Merostomata.
These fascinating creatures have a distinctive horseshoe-shaped carapace that covers most of their body, giving them their name. Their bodies are divided into three main sections: the prosoma (head), opisthosoma (abdomen), and the telson (tail). Horseshoe crabs have ten legs, with the first pair modified into pincers used for feeding and locomotion.
Horseshoe crabs are primarily marine bottom-dwellers, inhabiting shallow coastal waters and muddy or sandy substrates. They are scavengers and predators, feeding on a variety of organic matter, small invertebrates, and detritus found on the ocean floor.
