Orthoceras is a genus of extinct cephalopods that lived during the Paleozoic Era, particularly in the Devonian and Silurian periods, approximately 400 to 450 million years ago. These ancient marine organisms were distant relatives of modern-day squids, octopuses, and nautiluses.
Orthoceras had long, straight shells with a tapered, conical shape, reminiscent of a slender bullet. Their shells were divided into chambers, with the animal living in the largest chamber at the end of the shell. As the Orthoceras grew, it would add new chambers to its shell, continuously extending it.
These cephalopods were active predators, using their streamlined shells and tentacles to swim through the ancient seas in search of small prey. Their fossilized shells are abundant in sedimentary rocks, making them popular among collectors and paleontologists.
