These teeth, which erupt only in males, are visible even when the mouth is closed and are used during intraspecific combat for dominance and mating rights. Females and juveniles lack these prominent teeth, having smoother jaws. The head of the whale is relatively small, with a slightly bulging forehead known as the melon, which is used in echolocation.
