The name Thalassomedon means "sea lord," a fitting title for this formidable predator of the ancient seas. Thalassomedon belonged to the family Elasmosauridae, known for their incredibly long necks, which comprised about half of their total body length.
Thalassomedon is estimated to have reached lengths of up to 40 feet, with its neck alone accounting for roughly 20 feet. This extraordinary neck was composed of approximately 62 vertebrae, allowing for a wide range of motion that was advantageous for catching prey. The head was relatively small compared to the body, equipped with sharp, interlocking teeth designed to grasp slippery prey such as fish and cephalopods.
