The Chiru, or Tibetan antelope is a unique antelope species native to the high-altitude steppes of the Tibetan Plateau in China. Chiru are well-suited to harsh climatic conditions environment, with a dense, woolly undercoat known as shahtoosh, which provides exceptional insulation against the cold. This wool is highly prized for its softness and warmth, contributing to the species' endangerment due to illegal poaching.
Chiru are medium-sized antelopes, with males typically larger than females. Males are distinguished by their long, slender, and slightly curved horns, which can reach lengths of up to 70 centimeters. These horns are used in displays of dominance and during mating contests. Females generally lack horns, or if they do have them, they are much shorter and less pronounced. Both sexes have a light-colored coat, which helps them blend into their arid, rocky surroundings.
