Gastonia belonged to the group of armored dinosaurs known as ankylosaurids, characterized by their heavily armored bodies and defensive weaponry. Gastonia was relatively small compared to some of its relatives. Despite its smaller size, Gastonia possessed formidable defenses in the form of bony plates embedded in its skin and rows of sharp spikes along its sides and tail.
The body of Gastonia was covered in bony plates called osteoderms, which formed a protective armor similar to that of modern-day armadillos. These osteoderms were fused to the underlying bones and provided Gastonia with protection against predators such as Allosaurus and Ceratosaurus, which were common in its habitat.
In addition to its armor, Gastonia had a unique defensive adaptation in the form of rows of sharp spikes that ran along the sides of its body and tail. These spikes could inflict serious injuries on any predator that attempted to attack Gastonia from the side.
