The pygmy hippopotamus calf is an adorable and vital part of the pygmy hippo's lifecycle. Native to the dense forests and swamps of West Africa, pygmy hippos are smaller and more reclusive than their larger relatives, the common hippos. The calves are born after a gestation period of six to seven months. Unlike the common hippo, which gives birth in water, pygmy hippos typically give birth on land, and the calves are able to walk and swim almost immediately after birth.
The early life of a pygmy hippo calf is characterized by a strong bond with its mother. The mother is highly protective and provides constant care and guidance, teaching the calf how to forage and avoid predators. This bond is crucial for the calf’s survival, especially in the challenging and dense forest habitats where they reside. The calf stays with its mother for an extended period, nursing and learning essential survival skills before becoming independent.
