European mouflon is recognized for its striking appearance, particularly the males, which have large, curved horns used for dominance and mating displays. These horns can grow up to 33 inches in length and are a key feature in identifying the species. The ewes, or females, typically have shorter, less pronounced horns or are sometimes hornless.
Mouflons have a reddish-brown coat with a light-colored saddle patch on their back and white underparts. This coloration provides excellent camouflage against the rocky, forested environments they typically inhabit. During winter, their coat becomes thicker and darker, providing additional warmth and protection against the colder climate.
