The Dearc sgiathanach is a remarkable pterosaur discovered on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. Its name, derived from Scottish Gaelic, means both “winged reptile” and “reptile from Skye.”
Dearc sgiathanach had a wingspan of more than 8 feet (2.5 meters), making it the largest known pterosaur from the Jurassic period. It lived around 170 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic. Although often confused with dinosaurs, Dearc sgiathanach is a pterosaur, not a dinosaur. Pterosaurs are distant relatives of dinosaurs and were the first vertebrates to achieve powered flight, evolving about 50 million years before birds did. The fossil of Dearc sgiathanach is the best-preserved pterosaur skeleton found in Scotland. Its remains were uncovered in the Lealt Shale Formation on the Isle of Skye.
