Explore the Bullyland Ammonite Model from their Dinosaur Collection. A stunningly detailed and vibrant representation of this ancient cephalopod brought to life
Ammonites were an extinct group of marine mollusks that belonged to the class Cephalopoda, which includes modern squids, octopuses, and nautiluses. These fascinating creatures thrived in the oceans for hundreds of millions of years, from the Devonian period (around 419 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous period, roughly 66 million years ago, when they were wiped out in the same mass extinction event that killed the dinosaurs. One of the most distinctive features of ammonites was their spiral-shaped shells, which were divided into chambers. As the ammonite grew, it would create new, larger chambers while sealing off the older ones. The animal lived in the outermost chamber, and the inner ones were filled with gas or liquid, allowing the ammonite to regulate its buoyancy and float through the water.
