Dilong paradoxus, commonly known as Dilong, is an extinct species of theropod dinosaur that belongs to the family Tyrannosauridae. It lived during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 130 to 140 million years ago. Dilong paradoxus is of particular interest to paleontologists because it is one of the earliest and smallest tyrannosaurs known. Here are some key characteristics and information about Dilong paradoxus: Size: Dilong was a relatively small dinosaur compared to its later relatives like Tyrannosaurus rex. It measured about 6.5 feet (2 meters) in length and likely weighed around 20 to 30 kilograms (44 to 66 pounds). Feathers: One of the most notable features of Dilong paradoxus is the presence of feathers. Fossil evidence suggests that it had a covering of downy feathers, which sets it apart from the larger, more well-known tyrannosaurids like T. rex, which are thought to have had scales. Fossil Discovery: The first fossil remains of Dilong paradoxus were discovered in northeastern China, specifically in the Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province. The Yixian Formation is famous for its well-preserved fossils, and Dilong's discovery has provided valuable insights into the early evolution of tyrannosaurs. Carnivorous Nature: Like all tyrannosaurs, Dilong was a carnivorous predator. Its diet likely consisted of small vertebrates and other animals that it could overpower with its sharp teeth and claws. Significance: Dilong paradoxus holds significance in the study of dinosaur evolution and the transition from feathered theropods to the later large, mostly featherless tyrannosaurids. It provides evidence for the presence of feathers in the early evolutionary history of tyrannosaurs.
