Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai Information:
Pachyrhinosaurus is a genus of ceratopsid dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 to 67 million years ago. These dinosaurs were herbivorous and belonged to the family Ceratopsidae, commonly known as "horned dinosaurs." Pachyrhinosaurus was characterized by its unique and distinctive skull features, including large bony bosses on the front and top of the head but lacking a prominent nasal horn like some other ceratopsians.
Key features of Pachyrhinosaurus include:
Skull Bosses: Pachyrhinosaurus had thickened, bony bosses on its skull, which were formed by massive growths of bone that covered the front and top of the head. These bosses varied in size and shape depending on the species and age of the individual.
Frill: Like other ceratopsians, Pachyrhinosaurus had a frill, a bony extension at the back of its skull. The frill likely played a role in display and species recognition.
No Nasal Horn: Unlike some other ceratopsids, Pachyrhinosaurus did not possess a prominent nasal horn. Instead, it had a relatively flat, rounded, or slightly concave area on its snout.
Size: Pachyrhinosaurus was a large dinosaur, with some species reaching lengths of up to 26 feet (8 meters) and weighing several tons.
Known species of Pachyrhinosaurus include:
Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis: The type species, known from fossils discovered in Alberta, Canada. It was one of the first species to be described and is the most well-known among the Pachyrhinosaurus genus.
Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai: This species was identified in 2015 and named in honor of Al Lakusta, who contributed to the discovery of the Wapiti Lake Pachyrhinosaur specimen in Alberta, Canada.
Pachyrhinosaurus perotorum: Discovered in Alaska, USA, this species was identified in 2015 and represents one of the northernmost occurrences of a dinosaur during the Late Cretaceous period.
