Regaliceratops peterhewsi Information:
Regaliceratops peterhewsi, commonly known as "Hellboy," is a species of horned dinosaur (ceratopsid) that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 68.5 to 67.5 million years ago. It is a relatively recently discovered dinosaur, and as of my last update in September 2021, there might be some additional research or findings since then.
Here are some key points about Regaliceratops peterhewsi:
Discovery: The species was discovered in 2005 in southwestern Alberta, Canada, in the famous Dinosaur Park Formation, known for its rich fossil record of dinosaurs.
Unique Features: Regaliceratops is distinct from other ceratopsids due to its unique frill, which has been described as "spectacular" and resembles the crown worn by the comic book character "Hellboy," hence its nickname.
Scientific Name: The name "Regaliceratops" is derived from the Latin words "regalis" (meaning "royal") and "ceratops" (referring to the horned face), highlighting the distinctive frill. The species name "peterhewsi" honors Peter Hews, the person who first discovered the fossil.
Size: Regaliceratops was a relatively large dinosaur, estimated to be about 5 to 6 meters (16 to 20 feet) in length.
Horns and Frill: It had two large brow horns above its eyes and a prominent frill at the back of its head. The frill displayed unique characteristics, making it easily distinguishable from other known ceratopsids.
Classification: Regaliceratops belongs to the Chasmosaurinae subfamily within the Ceratopsidae family. Chasmosaurines were characterized by their long frills and relatively short brow horns compared to other ceratopsids.
