Saurornitholestes sullivani Information:

Saurornitholestes sullivani is a species of small theropod dinosaur that belongs to the Dromaeosauridae family. Here is some information about it: Taxonomy: Saurornitholestes sullivani was named and described by Dr. Philip J. Currie in 1988. The genus name "Saurornitholestes" is derived from the Greek words "sauros" (lizard) and "ornithos" (bird), along with "lestes" (robber), reflecting its bird-like predatory nature. The species name "sullivani" honors the American paleontologist J.P. Sullivan, who contributed significantly to the study of dinosaurs in Alberta, Canada. Size and Characteristics: Saurornitholestes was a small dinosaur, measuring about 1.2 to 1.5 meters (4 to 5 feet) in length and standing about 60 to 90 centimeters (2 to 3 feet) tall at the hip. It had a long tail, sharp claws, and a slender, lightweight body, making it agile and well-suited for hunting. Fossil Discoveries: Fossils of Saurornitholestes have been primarily found in the Dinosaur Park Formation in Alberta, Canada. The age of these formations dates back to the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 76.5 to 75.5 million years ago. Paleoenvironment: Saurornitholestes lived in a diverse ecosystem during the Late Cretaceous, which included other dinosaurs like large herbivores (hadrosaurs, ceratopsians) and other theropods. Behavior and Diet: Being a member of the dromaeosaurid family, Saurornitholestes was likely a swift and intelligent predator. It had sharp teeth and claws, which it likely used to hunt and prey on smaller dinosaurs, small mammals, and possibly small reptiles or birds. Feathers: Like many other theropod dinosaurs, Saurornitholestes was likely covered in feathers, which would have helped it with insulation and possibly display purposes.
